SARC Helped the Hassan Family Secure Lawful Custody

When ICE detained Abdi Hassan during a routine traffic stop, his family turned to SARC. Within 48 hours, our legal team secured his release and began building his asylum case.

When ICE detained Abdi Hassan during a routine traffic stop in St. Paul last month, his family faced their worst nightmare. Abdi, a father of three who has lived in Minnesota for over a decade, was taken into custody and transported to a detention facility without warning.

Within hours of receiving the call from Abdi's wife, Fatima, SARC's rapid response team sprang into action. Our legal director, Omar Hassan, immediately filed an emergency motion for release while our community outreach team provided support to the family.

Swift Legal Action

"Time is critical in these cases," explains Omar Hassan. "Every hour someone spends in detention can have devastating effects on their family and their case. We knew we had to act fast."

SARC's legal team worked through the night, gathering documentation and building a compelling case for Abdi's release. Within 48 hours, we secured his release on bond and immediately began preparing his asylum application.

Building a Strong Case

Abdi fled Somalia in 2012 after receiving threats due to his work as a journalist covering government corruption. His case represents exactly the kind of persecution that asylum law was designed to protect against.

"We gathered extensive documentation of Abdi's journalism work, the threats he received, and the dangerous conditions he would face if forced to return," says Omar. "His case is strong, and we're confident in a positive outcome."

Community Support Makes the Difference

Throughout the ordeal, SARC's community support network rallied around the Hassan family. Volunteers provided meals, childcare, and emotional support while Fatima navigated the legal process.

"I don't know what we would have done without SARC," says Fatima. "They didn't just help us legally—they treated us like family. They gave us hope when we felt hopeless."

Know Your Rights

This case highlights the importance of knowing your rights during any encounter with immigration enforcement. SARC offers free Know Your Rights workshops every month at community centers throughout the Twin Cities.

If you or someone you know is detained by ICE, contact SARC immediately at our emergency hotline. We provide 24/7 support and rapid legal response.

Abdi's asylum hearing is scheduled for later this year. In the meantime, he's back home with his family, working and contributing to the community he loves. His case remains ongoing, but thanks to SARC's intervention, he has the chance to fight for his right to stay in the country he now calls home.
