Mission Statement

The Somali American Rights Coalition works to support social justice, civil rights, and immigration justice by bringing communities together, advocating for fair policies, and helping Somali Americans and other immigrants take part in civic life.

Vision Statement

We envision a society where all immigrants and communities of color are treated with dignity, protected under the law, and empowered to shape policies that affect their lives. SARC strives to build strong, informed, and organized communities that promote fairness, accountability, and equal opportunity.

Purpose of the Organization

SARC is organized exclusively to promote social welfare, including:

• Protecting civil rights

• Supporting immigration justice

• Educating the community on laws, rights, and civic participation

• Organizing peaceful advocacy and community initiatives

• Engaging in permissible advocacy and lobbying consistent with 501(c)(4) regulations

Governance Policy

Board of Directors Responsibilities

• Provide strategic direction and oversight

• Approve major programs and budgets

• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local laws

• Maintain ethical and transparent leadership

Board Meetings

• Meetings shall be held at least quarterly

• Meeting minutes must be recorded and stored

Membership and Participation Policy

SARC welcomes community members, volunteers, advocates and partners.

All participants must:

• Follow the organization's code of conduct

• Respect diversity and cultural differences

• Participate in activities in a lawful and peaceful manner

Advocacy and Public Policy Policy

SARC may:

• Advocate for legislation and policies

• Educate the public on civil rights and immigration issues

• Organize community campaigns

SARC will:

• Ensure advocacy aligns with its mission

• Maintain records of advocacy activities

• Follow all federal and state regulations regarding lobbying and political activity

Community Organizing Procedures

When organizing events or campaigns:

• Identify community needs and goals

• Develop a clear action plan

• Communicate with partners and stakeholders

• Ensure safety and lawful conduct at all events

• Evaluate outcomes and document lessons learned

Financial Management Policy

To ensure accountability:

• All funds must be used for organizational purposes

• Two signatures are recommended for major expenses

• Financial records must be maintained and reviewed regularly

• Annual financial reports should be presented to the board

Conflict of Interest Policy

Board members, staff, and volunteers must:

• Disclose any personal or financial interest in organizational decisions

• Abstain from voting where conflicts exist

Members and volunteers may:

Volunteers are expected to:

• Follow organizational guidelines

• Maintain confidentiality when necessary

• Act professionally when representing SARC

Record Keeping Policy

SARC will maintain:

• Meeting minutes

• Financial records

• Program reports

• Membership and volunteer records

Records should be stored securely and backed up when possible.

Partnerships and Coalition Policy

SARC may partner with organizations that:

• Share similar values and goals

• Operate lawfully and ethically

• Support social justice and civil rights

Partnerships should be reviewed and approved by leadership.
